app reviews... come and get 'em!

Alphabeasties (CJ Educations).  This is NOT your typical cutesie alphabet app.  As you navigate through the alphabet one letter at a time, you are rewarded with the creation of these amazing letter creatures each time you correctly trace the target letter.  This is a visually abstract application that lends more to the creative side of its users.  If you're like me and have older students who are working on letter formation (hello? any OTs in here?), and want to use more age-appropriate content, then this is for you.  I think my middle school students who are on the spectrum will appreciate this as well.  Please let me know what you think if you try it.

10 Little Fish (CJ Educations) is a story book app that animates counting from one to ten.  You can have the book read to you automatically (hits on the screen will not interfere with the narration and timing), or you can choose to pace the narration yourself.  The graphics are characterized by children's drawings/coloring (which I think is captivating... a coloring book that's come alive!) and the voices are appropriate for the content.  You can also listen to the story as a song.  There is one activity included where you are given a number between one and ten and you are prompted to collect the proper number of fish.  Not the most exciting game- but for a student who is just learning or working to master early counting- this could be motivating.  ESL teachers might also find this app to be perfect for their English Language Learners as well.
